BRENDAN BEHAN ONCE said, “I only drink on two occasions – when I’m thirsty and when I’m not.” We’re sure he enjoyed a glass of whiskey in one of Ireland’s many snugs.
Over the course of six weeks, photographer Finn Richards set out to capture 108 snugs across Ireland. Richards, shows the many settings and decors synonymous with the beloved snug.
Here are some of the finest and quaintest spots to enjoy a quiet drink.
1. Flick through the pages of antiquated books and hurling annuals in this cosy corner of Ryan’s in Cashel
2. This snug in Cronin’s of Crosshaven looks as though it’s steeped in shipyard stories, if you stick around long enough the locals may recount them firsthand.
3. An intimate ledge at O’Connell’s in Galway, ideal for first-date small talk or sharing local scandal.
4. The perfect vantage point for barflys to stay abreast of the day’s events.
5. This country snug reminds us of afternoons spent in grandparent’s homes with a packet of crisps and a cheese toasty.
6. This dark setting in O’Dwyer’s, Limerick, allows for a moment of peace and quiet while the rest of the bar brims with conversation.
7. For some, the pub is a second home. The only thing missing from this retro living room set-up in the old Townhouse in Galway is a pair of slippers.
8. Pastels are usually popular in Spring, but we could enjoy the pink decor in Coffey’s of Borrisoleigh, Tipperary all year round.
9. Whiskey and images of dogs, what more could one require after a long day?
10. Under the watchful eye of John Jameson, a spot for friends to gather to enjoy whiskey in a myriad of ways.
11. The simplicity of this snug in Baker’s Bar, Clonmel calls for a book or a deck of cards to accompany your beverage.
